I won't bore you with the whole story of what I believe but perhaps you will be comforted by the part that starts where, in my sincere belief: after you die you have a life review during which you learn exactly how all of your actions, thoughts, and prayers literally affected the world, because you witness it all -your whole existence- "as" everyone your actions affected.
In the event that someone lived a terribly abusive or exploitative life, then their life review may be so unpleasant that they experience a severe guilt that they place upon themselves.
Sometimes they'll decide to literally cast themselves into Hell, suffering with delusions of atonement, there, in the consciousness piercing agony of the perception of eternal separation from and all but certain total rejection by our Source, Creation.
Eventually they will have gone through timeless agony, gained whatever there was to gain by their stay in the blistering cold solitude and darkness of Hell, and then, eventually, when they're ready: they'll brush themselves off, take some deep breaths, do some deep meditations, and then go for another rebirth to make more progress toward meeting their objectives.
See, in my opinion, when we originally broke off from the main chunk of what we think of as "God" we did it for some kind of very important reason. Why else would anyone leave an existence of Oneness?
We made the decision to leave the warm, patient, all-knowing, all-forgiving, perfect embrace of pure and total Love to send ourselves to Life on Earth within a dense, rich entanglement of filaments of "Purposes" far too complex for us to ever fathom while we're still here, fighting gravity.
We knew that before we incarnated, and we accepted it. We knew it's not possible for us to fail. We knew we were only setting ourselves up to have some very real, very challenging experiences in situations that make you feel powerless regardless of who you are.
There's more to it, but perhaps you find this comforting, so far? Excuse all typos, please.
I think if I were connected to God/Creation, and knew what I might have to endure or deal with living on Earth, I think I'd stay where I was! :-) And I still maintain that a loving, merciful God would never, could never, create a place like Hell. But at least in the case of your view, at least existence in Hell would not have to be undending.
